The present paper presents results of the study in removal of iron, arsenic and total coliform from drinking water using single-pass constructed soil filter (CSF). Results indicated that arsenic levels ranged from 0.5 to less than 10 μg l?1 levels; iron from 5 to less than 0.3 mg l?1 and coliform from 10?5 to less than 5 CFU/100 ml. The results revealed very high removal efficiency, i.e., over 99% and water quality as per WHO standard. 相似文献

在20℃、25℃下,将大型溞和老年低额溞分别按7+3(B组),5+5(C组),3+7(D组)的组合进行混合培养,以及用单种培养(10+0(A组),0+10(E组))作为对照,研究了温度和种间竞争对大型溞种群动态和两性生殖的影响.实验结果表明:在混合培养时,大型溞对老年低额溞产生明显的竞争优势.20℃、25℃下,单种培养的老年低额溞最大种群密度分别为大型溞的2.31和1.97,而在混合培养下老年低额溞的种群密度明显低于大型溞,在实验25d后几乎全部死亡.25℃下两种溞的种群密度之间存在极显著的负相关性(C组:r=-0.508,n=30,P<0.01;D组:r=-0.483,n=30,P<0.01).在20℃、单种培养下,大型溞在首次产幼溞时即出现雄体,且种群密度与雄体密度呈显著的相关性(r=0.678,n=24,P<0.01).大型溞的最大雄体密度(106 ind.(200ml)~(-1))和最大雄体比例(36.8%)均出现在20℃、单种培养下.25℃下,大型溞在混合培养的B组和C组首次产幼溞时即出现雄体,且雄体在混合培养B组的比例达28.2%.大型溞在25℃、单种培养下没有产生卵鞍,在混合培养下总计产生66个卵鞍,其中空卵鞍占51.5%,而在20℃、混合培养下没有卵鞍产生.实验结果暗示:在较高的温度下,种间竞争刺激了大型溞雄体的产生和卵鞍的形成,高密度的雄体有助于大型溞孤雌生殖雌体向两性生殖雌体的转化. 相似文献

Phragmites communis Trin. (common reed) is a recognized model plant for studying its adaptation to contrasting and harsh environments. To understand the inherent molecular basis for its remarkable resistance to combined stresses, we performed a comprehensive proteomic analysis of the leaf proteins from two ecotypes, i.e. swamp and desert dune, naturally growing in the desert region of northwestern China. First, a proteome reference map of Phragmites was established based on the swamp ecotype. Proteins were resolved by 2‐D/SDS‐PAGE and identified by MALDI‐TOF/TOF MS. In total, 177 spots were identified corresponding to 51 proteins. The major proteins identified are proteins involved in photosynthesis, glutathione and ascorbic acid metabolism as well as protein synthesis and quality control. Second, the 2‐DE profiles of the two ecotypes were compared quantitatively via DIGE analysis. Compared with swamp ecotype, 51 proteins spots are higher‐expressed and 58 protein spots are lower‐expressed by twofold or more in desert dune ecotype. Major differences were found for the proteins involved in light reaction of photosynthesis, protein biosynthesis and quality control and antioxidative reactions. The physiological significance of such differences is discussed in the context of a flow of complex events in relation to plant adaptation to combined environmental stresses. 相似文献

Umbilical cord (UC) and placenta (P) have been suggested as alternatives to bone marrow (BM) as sources of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) for cell therapy, with both UC‐ and P‐MSC possess immunophenotypic and functional characteristics similar to BM‐MSC. However, their migration capacity, which is indispensable during tissue regeneration process, is unclear. Under defined conditions, the migration capacity of BM‐ and P‐MSC was found 5.9‐ and 3.2‐folds higher than that of UC‐MSC, respectively. By the use of 2‐DE and combined MS and MS/MS analysis, six differentially expressed proteins were identified among these MSC samples, with five of them known to be involved in cell migration as migration enhancing or inhibiting proteins. Consistent with their migration capacity, the levels of migration enhancing proteins including cathepsin B, cathepsin D and prohibitin,were significantly lower in UC‐MSC when compared with those in BM‐ and P‐MSC. For the migration inhibiting proteins such as plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 (PAI‐1) and manganese superoxide dismutase, higher expression was found in the UC‐MSC. We also showed that the overexpression of the PAI‐1 impaired the migration capacity of BM‐ and P‐MSC while silencing of PAI‐1 enhanced the migration capacity of UC‐MSC. Studies have shown that the more iron in a given population, the more that population is vulnerable to intracellular opportunistic infections (OIs) in AIDS, mainly because these microbes make use of the intracellular iron to proliferate, and could render infections deadly. In contrast, macrophages that lack iron are effective in preventing an establishment of infection. We propose that reduction in total body iron could be a valuable treatment option for some intracellular infections, including OIs. We suggest two options to deprive pathogens of using intracellular iron (i) to practice regular blood-letting, an ancient treatment option, and (ii) to down-regulate hepcidin, the key hormone involved in the regulation of iron balance and recycling. This could also deprive transformed cells of metabolizing iron for survival. Whether or these methods serve to curb the onset of OIs/cancers to prolong HIV disease progression remains to be investigated. 相似文献

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is an inflammatory manifestation that occurs subsequent to initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy in terminal (HAART) HIV infection, mainly due to the restoration of robust immune responses directed against latent microbial antigens. IRIS is believed to be multifactorial and less studied. Herein, we postulate that hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) dysregulation, a well-documented manifestation in HIV/AIDS, could possibly disturb the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines leading to clinical IRIS. Butadiene-imide 1 (T-686) derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory activity against PAI-1 production and their ADMET (DMPK and toxicology) profiles. Among these derivatives, compound 15k (T-2639) showed good antithrombotic activity in two rat thrombosis models without affecting bleeding time, indicating reduction of haemorrhagic risk. Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen, first recognized as a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections. Community-associated S. aureus (CA-SA) pose a greater threat due to increase in severity of infection and disease among children and healthy adults. CA-SA strains in India are genetically diverse, among which is the sequence type (ST) 772, which has now spread to Australia, Europe and Japan. Towards understanding the genetic characteristics of ST772, we obtained draft genome sequences of five relevant clinical isolates and studied the properties of their PVL-carrying prophages, whose presence is a defining hallmark of CA-SA. We show that this is a novel prophage, which carries the structural genes of the hlb-carrying prophage and includes the sea enterotoxin. This architecture probably emerged early within the ST772 lineage, at least in India. The sea gene, unique to ST772 PVL, despite having promoter sequence characteristics typical of low expression, appears to be highly expressed during early phase of growth in laboratory conditions. We speculate that this might be a consequence of its novel sequence context. The crippled nature of the hlb-converting prophage in ST772 suggests that widespread mobility of the sea enterotoxin might be a selective force behind its ‘transfer’ to the PVL prophage. Wild type ST772 strains induced strong proliferative responses as well as high cytotoxic activity against neutrophils, likely mediated by superantigen SEA and the PVL toxin respectively. Both proliferation and cytotoxicity were markedly reduced in a cured ST772 strain indicating the impact of the phage on virulence. The presence of SEA alongside the genes for the immune system-modulating PVL toxin may contribute to the success and virulence of ST772. 相似文献
